glucocorticoid

A controlled trial of antepartum glucocorticoid treatment for prevention of the respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants. Liggins GC, Howie RN. Pediatrics. 1972 Oct;50(4):515-25. No abstract available. PMID: 4561295

Antenatal glucocorticoid therapy administered to women at risk for preterm delivery (PTD) reduced the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and mortality in their offspring. Antenatal glucocorticoid therapy leads to improvement in neonatal lung function by enhancing cell development (Type 1 and 2 alveolar cell maturation) and by inducing lung enzymes that play a role in biochemical maturation.

Effect of corticosteroids for fetal maturation on perinatal outcomes. NIH Consensus Development Panel on the Effect of Corticosteroids for Fetal Maturation on Perinatal Outcomes. [No authors listed] JAMA. 1995 Feb 1;273(5):413-8. Review. PMID: 7823388

Antenatal corticosteroid therapy is indicated for women at risk of premature delivery with few exceptions and will result in a substantial decrease in neonatal morbidity and mortality, as well as substantial savings in health care costs. The use of antenatal corticosteroids for fetal maturation is a rare example of a technology that yields substantial cost savings in addition to improving health.
