Human Blastocyst (day 3 to 6)

Movie shows in vitro development of a human morula stage to blastocyst stage. The movie covers the period of the first week (day 3 and day 6) post-fertilization and finishes with the blastocyst "hatching out" of the protective zone pellucida, ready to begin implantation in the second week.

00:00 day 3 - Initially a solid mass of cells morula stage (labelled H) enclosed by the zona pellucida.

00:18 day 4 - blastocoel formation, now blastocyst stage.

00:22 - inner cell mass (embryoblast)

00:29 - maximal expansion of blastocyst in ZP

00:31 - contraction

00:32 - re-expansion

00:37 day 5 - contraction

00:38 - re-expansion

00:39 - contraction (collapse)

00:40 - re-expansion (blastocoel enlargement)

00:41 - commence blastocyst hatching (1 o'clock position)

00:44 day 6 - complete hatching, blastocyst expansion (inner cell mass 2 o'clock position)

00:47 - trophoblast layer thickens

00:53 - movie finishes

Human blastocyst development (in vitro) from day 1 to day 6.

Day 1 - zygote, the first diploid cell.
Day 2 - 2 then 4 blasomeres, the first cells formed by mitotic cell division.
Day 3 - morula.
Day 4 - compacting morula.
Day 5 - blastocyst.
Day 6 - hatching blastocyst from zona pellucida shell, after this event the blastocyst can now attach and implant into the uterine wall.
