This animation shows the maternal and paternal pronuclei coming together following fertilization to form the first diploid cell, the zygote.


The process occurs within the zona pellucida (yellow), showing the three maternal polar bodies (green) generated by meiosis and the egg and spermatozoa nuclei (blue) loosing their nuclear membrane and the genomes combining.
