Introduction

These movies from a 2014 study[1] show early postnatal primordial follicle formation during mammalian ovarian folliculogenesis. Oocyte cysts break down to liberate individual MI-arrested oocytes some of which form primordial follicles while others seemingly disappear.

In mice
  • the oocyte numbers decrease (by about 50%) by apoptosis in perinatal ovaries (between E18.5 and P2).
  • Oocyte cysts break down to liberate individual MI-arrested oocytes
  • some of which form primordial follicles while others disappear.
