Human Embryo "Heuser" (1.6 mm)

This animation shows the early human embryo at 1.6 mm during week 2 of development. The original model stands about 1 m high (approx. x500) and is part of the Blechschmidt Collection.


Animation begins with ventral view of embryo.

  • Ventral view of the embryo from the yolk sac side (edge of model shows cut yolk sac). View shows endoderm lining the yolk sac and midline region of gastrulation (caudal) and axial process (cranial).
  • Lateral view shows extra-embryonic mesoderm covering the yolk sac and covering the amniotic sac.
  • Dorsal view shows the gastrulating epiblast (edge of model shows cut amniotic sac). View shows epiblast/ectoderm lining the amitotic sac and indent ending crainially at the primitive node.
