Introduction

All papers are listed, and can be searched for freely online, in NIH PubMed which in most cases includes the paper abstract. There are also a number of different commercial databases used by some Universities to access research papers.

There are then varied access to the full papers, based upon where and how you are accessing the internet and the Journal policy. If accessing through a University or other institution site with a Journal subscription, often the full papers are available. Alternatively the following options are generally available.

  1. Some Journals, like Public Library of Science (PLoS) and Public Library of Medicine (PLoM) offer full free access to the many articles published.
  2. Other Journals offer free access to older archived issues and limited access to the current issue.
  3. Still other Journals have access only through subscription or individual paper online purchase.

Electronic versions of papers are usually available as Acrobat documents (PDF) and may also be available as HTML.

Life Science Education

"CBE—Life Sciences Education (CBE-LSE), a free, online quarterly journal, is published by the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB). The journal was launched in spring 2002 as Cell Biology Education—A Journal of Life Science Education. The ASCB changed the name of the journal in spring 2006 to better reflect the breadth of its readership and the scope of its submissions."

The Cell: An Image Library

  • The Cell: An Image Library is a freely accessible, easy-to-search, public repository of reviewed and annotated images, videos, and animations of cells from a variety of organisms, showcasing cell architecture, intracellular functionalities, and both normal and abnormal processes. The purpose of this database is to advance research, education, and training, with the ultimate goal of improving human health.


National Institute of General Medical Sciences

"We offer free publications geared to high school and college students on topics including cell biology, genetics, chemistry, structural biology, computational biology and pharmacology. We encourage you to consider the environment and use our materials in their electronic forms."

About Open Biology

All papers are made freely available under an open access model immediately on publication at the Open Biology website and are deposited in PubMed Central on behalf of the author. Under a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC by 3.0), authors retain copyright for their article, but allow anyone to download, reuse, reprint, modify, distribute, and/or copy articles provided the original authors and source are cited.

Oxford Journals Open Access

  • Publication Rights Policies Open Access (OA) is the practice of providing unrestricted access to, and re-use of, journal articles. This is different to free access because of the implications for re-use.
  • Oxford Open
    • Articles will be clearly labelled as open access on the online Table of Contents page. Any users of the electronic table of contents (etocs) will therefore be notified when an open access article is published in the Oxford Open initiative.
    • Green open access - The exact timeframe varies from journal to journal, but the standard for OUP journals is 12 months in medicine and science and 24 months in other areas.
    • Gold open access - make their article freely accessible immediately upon publication.
    • Please go ahead with the use ensuring that a full acknowledgment is made to the original source of the material including the journal name, volume, issue, page numbers, year of publication, title of article and to Oxford University Press and/or the learned society.
