Introduction

Operating Systems Access
IPad-Phone.jpg

The current website will work for all online access through any browser enabled: desktop, laptop, netbook, iPad, tablet, iPhone and mobile (cell) phone. This page introduces some options for viewing on mobile devices and off-line.

We have now implemented the Wiki mobile browsing extension that will not require additional software. This will allow detection of the operating system accessing a page and displaying appropriately.

Previous Alternatives Option 1 - If you are accessing the site through an iPhone or iPad there is an alternative view formatted specifically for your screen size. This program also allows easy Bookmarking within the application for quick return and access to your favourite pages. This alternate view involves using a free application, Wikipanion, available through the Apple iTunes App Store.

Below I describe the steps in setting up Wikipanion for your iPhone or iPad. My special thanks to Robert Chin for his useful application.

Option 2 - If you wish to view the content off-line then pages can be converted to PDF format and viewed in iBooks or other mobile PDF viewers.

Application Limitations - embedded quicktime videos and audio mp3 do not play within PDFs, both will play in your favourite normal browser view. The PDF version will reflect only the original content shown at the time of conversion.

Wikipanion Setup

The setup instructions are the same for both iPhone and iPad. I will use screenshots from the iPhone.

Note - This is a free application and the Embryology site editor has no affiliation with the program author.

Changing Application Settings

The application default settings are for Wikipedia access. You will need to change the Wiki source setting (don't worry you can still have access to the original Wiki). In the following iPhone screenshots the red overlay shows the specific button pushes or menu items (Opening the screenshot will display a larger image).

1. Opening page

2. Select Wiki page

Wikipanion-image-22.jpg

3. Manage Wikis page

Wikipanion-image-33.jpg

4. Search page

Wikipanion-image-44.jpg

The Wikipedia main page is first displayed. In the top lefthand corner press the "W" icon. This will open the Select Wiki page. In the middle of the screen press the "Manage Wikis" menu item. This will open the Manage Wikis page. In the middle of the screen press the "Search" menu item. This will open the Search page. In the search window enter "Embryo" This will show the Embryology Wiki as a search result. Press the "Add" button. This will return you to the Select Wiki page.
Wikipanion-image-55.jpg 5. Select Wiki page

The page should now show the Embryology Wiki in the menu items with a tick.

At the top right of the screen press the "Done" button.

Congratulations, you have now changed the default Wiki setting!

Note - you can return to this page later and reselect Wikipedia or add many other Wikis using the same method.

Wikipanion-image-6.jpg 6. Embryology

If you have completed the changes correctly the Embryology Main Page image should now be displayed.

  1. Search the site - by typing a term in the top window.
  2. Select topics - by clicking terms in the main page image.
  3. Select links - by scrolling down the main page and selecting links.

For additional options continue the tutorial below (options include page sub-headings, adding bookmarks)

Note - downloading pages for offline viewing is only available on the commercial + version.

Seeing Page Sub-Headings

Wikipanion-image-66.jpg Contents

The list icon is shown in the centre of the menu at the bottom of the screen.

This will open a list of the major sub-headings on the currently displayed page.

Selecting the sub-heading from the displayed list will jump immediately to that location on the page.
