Stomach Gastric Gland Distribution

Cardiac glands

• heavily branched tubular glands
  • similar to the cardiac glands of the esophagus
• contain mainly mucus-producing cells
• a few of the secretory cells characteristic for the principal glands may be present

Principal glands

(corpus-fundic)

• each glandular tubule consists of three parts:

1. a deep body
2. an intermediary neck
3. an upper isthmus

• gland tubule oriented more or less perpendicular to the surface of the epithelium.
• principal glands have four cell types: chief cells, parietal cells, mucous neck cells and endocrine cells.

Pyloric glands

• glands are more coiled than principal glands
• may also be branched
• Endocrine cells are more frequent than in principal glands
  • gastrin-producing cells
• a few parietal cells may be present
• chief cells are usually absent
