Human Embryo SEM (Carnegie stage 10)
Carnegie stage 10, Week 3 (21 days, 4 somite pairs) GA week 5. Scanning elector micrograph of the embryo ventral view. Ventral body wall and yolk sac have been removed.
Open neural plate lying above the buccopharyngeal membrane.
|
Primitive heart tube exposed by removal of ventral body wall. The space surrounding the tube os the pericardial cavity. The foregut lies behind the heart tube and is not visible. | Midgut connection to the yolk sac. The ventral body wall and yolk sac have been removed, exposing the large opening (connection) of the two structures at this stage. The lining of the midgut is endoderm covered in a layer of splanchnic mesoderm. Note that with continued folding this open connection is reduced to a narrow yolk stalk (vitelline duct or omphalomesenteric duct). | Connecting stalk ventrally connects the embryo to the chorionic wall. Within it will lie the placental vessels and allantois. The hindgut lies behind this structure inside the embryo and along with the cloacal membrane is not visible in this image. |
