Diagram of the skin epidermis: shows a melanocyte in the basal epithelium. Its dendrites extend into the stratum spinosum, transferring melanosomes to surrounding keratinocytes via the extracellular space. Melanosomes populate the perinuclear space of the keratinocytes, providing photo-protection.
