The role of Nodal or related signaling molecules is inferred from the fact that zebrafish mutants of the competence factor oep have small hearts and oeplspadetail mutants lack a heart altogether. Wnt11 is a potent cardiac inducer that is present in mesoderm. The neural ectoderm (not depicted here) is a source of inhibitors of heart field formation.
