Human Term Placental Villi

  • The villi at term lack the earlier intactcytotrophoblast shell and have syncitotrophoblast cells (purple) attached in clumps.
  • Majority of villi core occupied by blood vessels with small amount of surrounding mesenchyme.
  • The fetal red blood cells now also lack the earlier distinctive nuclei.
