These drawings illustrate the position of the soft palate at rest and during speech in a healthy person, where it closes off the nasal cavity from the oral cavity during speech. In individuals with velopharyngeal insufficiency, the soft palate fails to close off the nasal cavity. Light red: soft palate; dark red: hard palate; light blue: nasal cavity, oral cavity and pharynx.
