Gastrointestinal Tract Blood Supply

Each region of the embryonic gastrointestinal tract has a specific arterial supply which historically defined the 3 adult gastrointestinal tract regions.


  1. Foregut - celiac artery (Adult: pharynx, esophagus, stomach, upper duodenum, respiratory tract, liver, gallbladder pancreas)
  2. Midgut - superior mesenteric artery (Adult: lower duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, appendix, ascending colon, half transverse colon)
  3. Hindgut - inferior mesenteric artery (Adult: half transverse colon, descending colon, rectum, superior part anal canal)

oesophagus (osophagus}

stomach

liver

gallbladder ( and bile ducts)

pancreas (dorsal & ventral)

upper duodenum

lower duodenum

small intestines (jejunum, ileum)

cecum

appendix

Ascending colon

proximal 2/3 of transverse colon

distal 1/3 of transverse colon

descending colon

sigmoid colon

rectum

Upper anal canal

Urogenital sinus
