Drosophila Melanogaster Mutant Antennapedia Head scanning EM

Note in this mutant fly where the antenna should normally be are a pair of "legs" thus pedia. Compare this with the linked image of the normal (wild-type) fly head.

This mutant image shows the basis of the discovery of the first "embryo patterning" or homeotic genes in the fly and led to the discovery of the homeobox domain, found in the Homeobox transcription factor family.
