Human Fetal Ovary Meiosis (second trimester)

(A) High magnifications of histological sections of a human ovary at week 15 (GA week 17) immunostained for the meiotic markers H2AFX (red) and SYCP3 (green) showing zone 2. image

(B-D) High magnifications of histological sections of a human ovary at week 19.5 (GA week 21.5), immunostained for the meiotic markers H2AFX (red) and SYCP3 (green) showing zone 1, zone 2 and zone 3.

White arrows point to germ cells showing decondensed chromatin and various degrees of H2AFX and SYCP3 expression. Note that primordial follicles (indicated by white asterisks), characteristic of zone 3, were negative for both H2AFX and SYCP3. Ai,Bi,Ci,Di, DAPI channel only.

Scale bars are 30 µm.
