The first manifestation of the development of the eye is a hollow protrusion from that part of the neural tube which forms the anterior cerebral vesicle. A vesicle is an enclosed cavity, between two layers of tissue and filled with fluid, like a water blister on the hand. The neural tube, as explained before, is a tube developed along the dorsum or back of the foetus, during the tubular stage of development, and the whole nervous system is developed from the cells lining this tube. This hollow protrusion is known as the primary optic stalk. (See A, Fig. 1.)
