Introduction

Franz Keibel (1861 - 1929)

Franz Keibel (1861-1929) was a German anatomist and embryologist. Beginning in 1897 he was the editor of the series "vertebrate embryological standard panels" (Normentafeln zur Entwicklungsgeschichte der Wirbeltiere), published in German, each volume covered a specific vertebrate species. This included human embryos (Homo sapiens). These standard tables form the basis of the modern embryological staging systems.

Born in Berlin (July 6, 1861) he studied medicine in both Berlin and Strasbourg. Received his doctorate in Strasbourg in 1887 "The natives of the Canaries" (Die Urbewohner der Canaren). He was appointed as professor at the University of Strasbourg in 1914 and then was the successor to Oscar Hertwig in Berlin in 1922. He held honorary doctorates from the University of St Andrews , University of Birmingham and Harvard University.
