File:Follicle 001 icon.jpg</wikiflv> This animation shows how a follicle located at the ovary cortex within the ovary matures and grows increasing in volume and finally ruptures at ovulation, releasing the egg along with follicular fluid into the peritoneal cavity.

The mature secondary follicle (antral follicle) is also known as a Graafian follicle.

The released egg enclosed in the protective zona pellucida which in turn is surrounded by supporting granulosa cells.
