Smooth muscle has a wide distribution through many tissues in association with blood vessels, arteries and arterioles containing smooth muscle in their vessel walls. The other main location is within the muscular wall of the gastrointestinal tract.

The other main locations are within the muscular wall of the: gastrointestinal tract, internal genital tract (uterus, ductus deferens) and renal (ureters, urinary bladder).
