Paired axial (Pax) genes belong to the Hombeobox gene family of transcription factors.
These proteins have sequence homology to the Drosophila segmentation genes paired and gooseberry.
The mammalian Pax proteins are numbered 1-9, all contain the paired box sequence (124 amino-acid conserved domain).
