Cardiac Embryology     Begin Basic     Begin Intermediate     Begin Advanced

Most of cardiac development occurs between weeks 4 and 8 of embryonic development. Few developments occur after this time, with some exceptions such as valve remodelling. Abnormalities in cardiovascular development are responsible for approximately 20% of birth defects. Hence as the earliest and one of the most clinically significant systems to form, cardiac development represents an important area of both embryological and clinical studies.

This website provides the following three modules of different levels of difficulty, each designed to teach cardiac embryology:

  • Basic: directed at high school students with little previous study of embryology
  • Intermediate: directed at university level students with some previous study of embryology
  • Advanced: directed at those with a significant level of previous study of embryology as well as some prior study of cardiac development.

Within these modules are separate units focussing on some of the main concepts of heart development. There are 3 units within the basic, 7 within the intermediate, and 9 within the advanced module (see below). You can begin at the start of the basic level and move upwards through the levels revising the same concepts taught in a progressively more detailed fashion. Alternatively you can begin in the intermediate or advanced level.

Throughout the site, you will see the following navigation bar (or one similar) at the top of the page:

This allows you to move between pages within the same level, or alternatively to jump to the beginning of a different level. Green represents the basic module, yellow the intermediate, and red the advanced.

The animation bar at the bottom of the page allows you to move through the information sequentially as well as moving to the same content in a different level of complexity:

Mnay of the concepts taught in embryology are best represented with animations or diagrams. The animations in this module are played using Adobe Flash Player. Most of the pictures appear on the unit pages as thumbnails. To see the images more clearly, simply click on the picture which will take you to the original sized version. To return to the module simply click the back button in your browser window.
