A free Human Tubal Ovum in a Late Cleavage Stage

An ovum mass was washed from a partially blocked human tube after hysterectomy. It was photographed, fixed, embedded, and sectioned. It is an ellipsoid in form, measuring 120 X 180 micra. The zona pcllucida is intact. To it adhere some granulosum cells. The solid ovum is made up of a mass of small cells, approuuiately 200 to 300 in number.

This ovum is definitely more advanced in development than is tile ninety-six how stage in the monkcp. It is not as far advanced’as is the eight-day monkey oxum. IIence the estimated age is placed at six or seven days, consistent with the menstrual history and with the coital history.

Sections of the ruptured follicle show a corpus luteum slightly more advanced than those described by Allen for nnfertilizcd human tubal eggs. Srctions of tlie endometrium shorn an carly secretory phase which is definitely not premenstrual.

This ovum, in the author’s knowledge, is the only fertiliced human egg ever to be recovered before implantation.
