Human Fetal Adrenal Gland (week 10)
(10 week, 40mm, parasagittal section)
Histology shows the location of the developing adrenal gland. The spongy appearance at the centre of the adrenal is the degenerating fetal cortex (fetal zone). The dense region around the outside of the adrenal is the developing adult cortex (definitive zone). synthesized cortisol
- fetal zone - (inner) large eosinophilic cells, synthesize cortisol, feedback to anterior pituitary to modulate androgen biosynthesis and ensure normal female sexual differentiation.
- definitive zone - (outer) small, densely packed basophilic cells
