Stratified Epithelia cartoon

This simplified cartoon shows the 3 different types of stratified epithelia in the body.

  1. non-keratinising stratified squamous epithelium.
  2. keratinising stratified squamous epithelium.
  3. transitional epithelium.
  • identifies the different layers names and locations.
  • key cell type keratinocytes.
  • epithelial basal layer is the source of stem cells replacing the overlying cells.
  • all epithelia are separated from an underlying connective tissue by a specialised extracellular matrix, the basement membrane.
