Human Embryo Limb Rotation
Arrows have been superimposed upon this Carnegie stage 19 embryo to show the direction in which the upper and lower limbs rotate during development.
Limb | Upper | Lower |
---|---|---|
Rotates | dorsally (laterally) | ventrally (medially) |
Rostral | thumb | toe |
Outward | elbow faces outward | knee faces outward |
Extensor muscles | lateral and posterior of limb | anterior aspect of limb |
Links: image | limb | dermatomes | spinal nerve table |
This distinctive embryonic rotation also establishes the future sensory pattern of dermatomes, segmentally patterned before this rotation.
