Polysialic acid and cell interactions

(A) PSA chains attached to the fifth Ig-like domain of NCAM via N-linked glycosylation.

(B) Expression of NCAM with PSA (red) causes a physical impairment of molecular and/or membrane-membrane contacts that in turn inhibits trans interaction of not only NCAM (black) but also other cell interaction molecules (green and blue). FN, fibronectin domain; Ig, Ig domain.
