Mouse newborn ovary day 2-3.5 (in vitro)
Oocyte cysts break down to liberate individual MI-arrested oocytes some of which form primordial follicles while others seemingly disappear.
Movie shows primordial follicle formation during mammalian ovarian folliculogenesis.
- In mice, the oocyte numbers decrease (by about 50%) by apoptosis in perinatal ovaries (between E18.5 and P2).
- Oocyte cysts break down to liberate individual MI-arrested oocytes some of which form primordial follicles while others seemingly disappear.
