Human Floating Chorionic Villi

A figure showing the changes in placental villi between early (first trimester) and late (third trimester) placental development.

Villi Structure:

  1. syncytiotrophoblast and cytotrophoblast change their cellular organisation.
  2. Capillaries increase within the villi, at term nearly the entire villi is occupied by capillaries with only minimal surrounding connective tissue.
  3. Hofbauer cells are abundant in villi in both first and second trimesters (though only shown in the term villi). Later Hofbauer cells may have a different embryonic origin.
