Fig. 19. Ventral and dorsal channels left when the central part of the 5th arch mass

Diagrams to show the ventral (V) and dorsal (D) channels left when the central part of the 5th arch mass (M) occludes the remainder of the original sagittal cavity. The later stages are opening up from below, owing to the formation of the cricoid.

The transverse cavity opens, from its earliest stage, into the front end of the ventral channel.
