Oxygenated (from the placenta) and non-oxygenated (from the lower body) blood enters the right atrium via the sinus venosus. Part of this blood travels to the right ventricle and then through the pulmonary circulation. The rest of the blood in the right atrium passes through the foramen ovale to the left atrium. The septum primum acts as a valve of the foramen ovale preventing backflow of blood (i.e. from the left atrium to right atrium). Blood returning from the pulmonary circulation and blood from the right atrium flows from the left atrium into the left ventricle. Blood from the left ventricle exits the heart via the aorta.
