Duodenum Histology

Duodenum (adult rat) (Stain - Haematoxylin Eosin)

An example of a simple columnar epithelium.

  • epithelium contains goblet cells (mucus secreting).
  • goblet cells
    • mucus acts as a lubricant (gastrointestinal tract) or a "trap" for particulates or organisms (respiratory)
    • named because their cell shape looks like a "goblet", a curve-shaped cup.
    • they only have this appearance in fixed tissues, due to the effects of the fixative.
