Duodenum Histology
Duodenum (adult rat) (Stain - Haematoxylin Eosin)
An example of a simple columnar epithelium.
- epithelium contains goblet cells (mucus secreting).
- goblet cells
- mucus acts as a lubricant (gastrointestinal tract) or a "trap" for particulates or organisms (respiratory)
- named because their cell shape looks like a "goblet", a curve-shaped cup.
- they only have this appearance in fixed tissues, due to the effects of the fixative.
