The development of chemical and physiological phenotypes occurs via both intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms. Intrinsically, nociceptors can express some level of neuropeptides such as Substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Contact with epidermal cells (extrinsic cues) increases this neuropeptide expression. Development of physiological phenotype involves expression of Nav1.8 and TRVP1 in response to neurotrophins.
