Introduction

This lecture is an introduction to stem cells and their use in Neuroscience. The key components covered are: historic background, stem cells, blastocyst, pluripotential, developmental stem cells, adult stem cells, therapeutic applications.

The lecture slides contain enough information as an introduction to the subject for this level of study. If you are interested in further reading, I have also included below links to more detailed textbooks with further information and images. Please note this additional information is not necessarily examinable, but may be useful if you have not previously studied biology.

The link below to lecture slides allows you to open and view the slides in your web browser or download the PDF document for later viewing/printing. The online text Developmental Biology links listed below are worth reviewing for this lecture.

  • About the Database from NCBI "This database is a catalog of human genes and genetic disorders authored and edited by Dr. Victor A. McKusick and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere, and developed for the World Wide Web by NCBI, the National Center for Biotechnology Information. The database contains textual information and references. It also contains copious links to MEDLINE and sequence records in the Entrez system, and links to additional related resources at NCBI and elsewhere."
