Introduction

Still a work in progress. How do you select the key research discoveries in embryology? Sometimes it is some years after the event that the true relevance of a discovery is felt, we still like to look back to "who was first". There is also the idea that some concepts "have their time" due the the simple common application of research in many labs to a single problem.

Apoptosis (gets a name)

The original paper that put a name to a concept of "programmed cell death" that had been developing in the literature. Kerr JF, Wyllie AH, Currie AR. Apoptosis: a basic biological phenomenon with wide-ranging implications in tissue kinetics. Br J Cancer. 1972 Aug;26(4):239-57. Review.
