Introduction

Below are images of models commissioned by Giuseppe Galletti (? - 1819) currently held in the Institute and Museum of the History of Science (Italy) Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza (IMSS). Giuseppe Galletti and others used terracotta and wax models that he had commissioned in Florence between 1770 and 1775 to train surgeons and midwives (More? IMSS - Giuseppe Galletti). These models are available for viewing in IMSS exhibit Room XVIII - Surgery and Obstetrics.

Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Florence

The obstetric wax models are life-sized and the terracotta versions are reduced to a 1:3 scale and originally come from the Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Florence (Ospedale di Santa Maria Nuova) which was founded in 1288 by Folco Portinari.

Special thanks to Sabina Bernacchini from IMSS for allowing reproduction of selected images from the exhibition on this embryology education site.
