- For 150 years, the role of the Balbiani body remained a complete mystery
- it was commonly believed to participate either in the formation of lipids or in the multiplication of mitochondria (Guraya, 1979).
- 1993, Kloc et al. showed that the Balbiani body/mitochondrial cloud in Xenopus is a vehicle that transports localized RNA to the vegetal pole of the oocyte.
