Mouse Zygote Pronuclei
A mouse zygote was double-stained with anti-5hmC antibody (green) and anti-5mC antibody (red).
The smaller maternal pronucleus is closer to the polar body (pb). Mouse zygotes male pronucleus contains 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) formed by enzymatic oxidation of 5-methylcytosine (5mC).
- 5hmC - 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (green) is a modified base form of cytosine found in embryonic stem cells, thought to have a role in regulating gene expression
- 5mC - 5-methylcytosine (red) is a modified methylation of a base 5-methylcytidine, thought to have a role in regulating gene expression.
