Lymphatic System Overview

Cartoon overview of human lymphatic system showing distribution of major lymphatic vessels, nodes and associated organs. Note the cartoon does not show immune tissue associated with the integumentary, respiratory, gastrointestinal tract and other systems.

Structure Function
  1. Cells - blood cells (parenchyma), connective tissue (stroma)
  2. Vessels - lymphatic vessels
  3. Diffuse - (extra-nodal tissue) nodules, Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissues (MALT)
  4. Nodes - (historic, "glands")
  5. Organs - thymus, spleen
  1. Immune - “monitor” of body surfaces, internal fluids
  2. Extracellular fluid - returns interstitial fluid to circulation
  3. Gastrointestinal tract - carries fat and fat-soluble vitamins
