Human Pronuclear Stage - Second Polar Body

  • The second polar body (PB2) has a spheroidal nucleus consisting of dense chromatin aggregates and a highly hydrated nucleoplasm.
  • A double nuclear membrane is present. The lamellar structures (*) embedded in the chromatin clumps may represent either nuclear annulate lamellae or the chromosomal axial complex.
  • The lamella toward the left of the micrograph is shown at higher magnification in the insert. Note the regressive changes of the mitochondria.
