Introduction
This lecture is an introduction to the early development
of the nervous system. The key components covered are:
bilaminar embryo, trilaminar embryo, ectoderm, notochord,
neural plate, neural groove, neurtal tube, axis
formation,secreted factors, Sonic Hedgehog, neural
crest.
The lecture slides and textbook alone contain enough
information as an introduction to the subject for this level
of study. If you are interested in further reading, I have
also included below links to more detailed textbooks with
further information and images. Please note this additional
information is not necessarily examinable, but may be useful
if you have not previously studied biology.

cardiovascular development. The
intraembryonic spaces (coelom) and the
primitive placenta (villi) also continue to
develop.

development is one of the earliest to begin
and the last to be complete, generating the
most complex structure within the embryo.
This long time period of development also
means any in utero insult during pregnancy
may have consequences to development of the
nervous system.
