The myotendinous junction (MTJ) is a specialiazed junction between a skeletal muscle and the tendon which transmit the force of the muscle contraction to the bone of the skeleton. Muscle contraction is transmitted to the skeleton, moving a bone. During development the MTJ has a unique microenvironment. Fibroblasts form the cellular component that produce large amounts of extra-cellular matrix. The extracellular matrix (ECM) secreted and deposited is high in collagen type I. The secreted extracellular matrix can also by altered by physical activity and mechanical loading. These changes are to collagen turnover, both synthesis and degradation, through metalloprotease enzymes (MMPs). |

Tendons are a regular dense connective tissue with extracellular matrix fibres running parallel to each other. Fibroblasts form the cellular component that produce large amounts of extra-cellular matrix. The extracellular matrix secreted and deposited is high in collagen type I.
