Introduction

Nail development occurs about week 10, with fingernails before toenails (as in limb development upper then lower)

Nail fields appears at tip and migrates to dorsal surface.

Thickened epidermis surrounding cells form nail fold. Keratinization of proximal nail fold forms nail plate.

Nails reach tip during week 32 for fingernails and week 36 for toenails. Nail can be used therefore as a growth indicator of prematurity.
