D4

D6 Below, shows transverse section of spinal cord with associated segmental level spinal ganglia and the vertebral body. Note bilateral (L/R) symmetry, with significantly different vento/dorsal appearance (see molecular note)

Molecular Note

At an early stage the notochord induces the ventral floor plate and motorneurons, white the overlying ectoderm induces the dorsal spinal neurons. The ventral signal is sonic hedgehog (a transcription factor). The dorsal signal is Dorsalin-1 (a TGFbeta family growth factor). These 2 factors compete (antagonistically) for neurons in the spinal cord in determining their fate.

UNSW Histology Slides

The following slides are from the UNSW, Department of Anatomy, Histology Slide Set 2003. Slides are numbered according to the Histology Set number. The tissues listed relate to this developing system. Note that most slides are from mature tissues (unless otherwise indicated, see also all slides).
