Introduction

Epithelial cells (organised cellular layer) and mesenchymal cells (embryonic connective tissue) or disorganised cellular layers interact together signaling back and forth by secreted signals or contact in the differentiation of many different organs, tissues and structures.

These embryological developmental mechanisms may also be recapitulated abnormally in the development of some diseases. (More? metastatic capabilities)

Some Recent Findings

Mani SA, Yang J, Brooks M, Schwaninger G, Zhou A, Miura N, Kutok JL, Hartwell K, Richardson AL, Weinberg RA. Mesenchyme Forkhead 1 (FOXC2) plays a key role in metastasis and is associated with aggressive basal-like breast cancers. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2007 May 30;

"FOXC2 transcription factor, which is involved in specifying mesenchymal cell fate during embryogenesis, is associated with the metastatic capabilities of cancer cells. ...FOXC2 expression is induced in cells undergoing epithelial-mesenchymal transitions (EMTs) triggered by a number of signals, including TGF-beta1 and several EMT-inducing transcription factors, such as Snail, Twist, and Goosecoid."
