Introduction
This page is an overview of the notes available
in the UNSW Embryology
Program. The above list of terms
probably looks complicated, but provides quick
access to a specific topic of interest on this
page.
These notes have been prepared to give an
overview of aspects of early embryonic and
systematic development. The material has been
prepared those with an interest in Embryology,
though generally at a level suitable for students
at tertiary education. Each section of notes has an
introduction/overview page followed by references
and abnormalities that relate to that stage or
system. This is then followed by an example of an
early (stage 13/14) and late (stage 22) example of
embryonic development. The current direction of
much embryological research is to understand the
mechanisms of development at the molecular level.
Interestingly, the mechanisms of development appear
to be common to all species and much of what we now
know about human mechanisms have been derived from
animal models. These
notes are not yet complete (April 1999). A
List of Recent Updates to
Program is also available.
UNSW medical students (ANAT2007) should note
that the current course content is related to only
the serial sections of the stage 13/14 pig and
stage 22 human embryo available from the Serial
Sections (with
images) (without
images) page. Examinable material is
only that derived from your lectures and
given in the practical classes and not the
additional material and resources listed below.
