Introduction

The table below lists the slide sets used in teaching Histology to undergraduate Medical and Science Students in the School of Anatomy. The most current catalogue of slides can also be found at the School of Medical Sciences WWW Site . Note that the overall composition of slide sets will change with time. These slides are used to show both developing and adult tissues using typical histological stains. Additional demonstration slides are used in classes. Slides should be viewed in relation to the types of tissues that are developing in the embryo.

About View Slides

In the table below clicking on the View Slides option will open an unlabelled PDF image of the listed Histology slide at different magnifications (Microscope magnification differs from those in Lab). Use your web browser option to "open link in new window" to keep this page and table open. These images have security that prevents their alteration or printing and were originally prepared as a project by 2 medical students ( Immie and Kevin) to help with your histology revision.

Histology in Notes Section

On page 5 of each section of the Notes is a list of relevant UNSW slides and links to external sites relevant to that system. No attempt has been made in this current Program to give full histological descriptions of slides. I have also included links to the start pages of some good external WWW Histology resources which have histological images and quiz questions.

In addition, there is a system by system break down of these external WWW resources also available.

The Fabric of Life

The School of Anatomy UNSW has an excellent Histology Program under development "The Fabric of Life", for more details contact Dr B. Freeman. This program is currently only available from computers in the Department of Anatomy or the Biomedical Library.

Van Gieson,  Masson's Trichrome

stain is a combination of two or more dyes.

Van Gieson

used with Iron Haematoxylin, giving brown nuclei.

Alcian Blue with Van Gieson

mucins stain green

PTAH

Phosphotungstic acid and Haematoxylin.

Luxol Fast Blue with Tartrazine

myelin may be green

Picro-Mallory

similar to Masson's Trichrome, giving orange/yellow RBCs.
