Beginnings, Growth and DevelopmentThis lecture covers the period of Embryonic development, in Humans from week 3 to week 8 and is divided into 23 Carnegie stages of embryonic development. This period of development will also be covered in your Practical, which is currently being updated for 2008 and will be available online. Note, the period from week 9 to week 38 is considered Fetal development and will be covered in detail in the Laboratory 11. The embryonic period is sometimes difficult to understand for at least 2 reasons.
Firstly, because there are many structures which exist only "transiently", that is they are not around in the adult, and each structure may have many names that will change with differentiation and development.
Secondly, there is something happening everywhere! Each system, structure and organ is going through many changes before it even reaches a primitive version of the mature structure.
