How to Install the Embryology Program?

All Installation Details are included on the CD Itself.

1. Your Computer must have a WWW Browser Program (Netscape, or Internet Explorer, or Cyberdog) installed. If you do not have a browser, Netscape is available on the CD and must be installed first before running the Program.

2. Having Installed a browser you then have to open the first page of the program called Embryo.htm on the CD. This page can be accessed directly by double clicking on the small human embryo that appears on the splash screen when you insert the CD.

3. To view Movies QuickTime needs to be installed upon your computer. Installation of Quicktime will also install the Quicktime plug-in to your browser.

All Done!

Macintosh Users

1. This is a Mac/Windows Version only.

2. System Minimum requirements: CD Rom Drive, System 7.1, 16 mB RAM. The images look best in Thousands or Millions of colours, but will run at 256 colours. Note that the new Mac system OS9.0 and OS X will not display the opening image (on the desktop when CD is loaded) correctly, you will have to follow the instructions below.

3. If you have a WWW Browser (Netscape or Explorer) installed on your computer, open your browser then open the file "Embryo.htm" within the folder "Embryo on the CD. You are now ready to start! If you do not have a WWW Browser, you will have to install Netscape Navigator 4.08 from the CD and restart your computer. The program will run with any WWW Browser.

Note: Netscape Navigator 4.08 can only be installed on computers with more that 16Mb of available memory.

4. Once WWW Browser installed you will have to use the Open File from within Netscape Navigator to locate on the CD the Folder "Embryo" within which is the File "Embryo.htm". Once this file is open, add it as a Bookmark to the Netscape Navigator. Next time you open Netscape Navigator you can just select the bookmark.

5. If your computer is not connected to the internet then the external links within the program will not function.

6. Quicktime and Acrobat Reader are available on the CD in the Netscape folder. These additional programs are not necessary to run Embryology, but movies and PDF documents will not open unless they are installed. If you do not have Quicktime plug-in installed in your WWW Browser Plug-in folder then you will not be able to view the movies within the browser window. There is an installer for Quicktime on the CD in the Netscape folder. Alternatively, a plug-in and Quicktime is available for both Mac and Windows at http://quicktime.apple.com. PDF documents require Acrobat Reader to be installed.

Note you can add any page as a bookmark on your WWW Browser to go immediately to it.

Some More Details about best Viewing etc

The program is really a large WWW Site, using HTML as a linking tool. The program is therefore platform independent requiring only a WWW browser to be installed. If you already have another WWW browser installed (Internet Explorer®, Cyberdog®, etc) do not bother to install the provided browser.

The author has permission to distribute Netscape® for educational purposes only.

The only additional requirement is a Quicktime plug-in to view the movies on the CD.

I have included only the earlier 2.02 version of Netscape® so as to keep the memory requirements to a minimum, if you have additional memory installation of Netscape® 3.0 and Communicator is also currently available.

You will always see more of each page if you minimize the menu bar at the top of the page in the WWW Browser.

Therefore in WWW Browser Options
General Preferences select "show tool bar as Text"

turn off Show Directory Button

All pages have been optimized to be displayed on a 640x480 screen size.

Pages are best viewed when the browser is set to fill the screen.

No table or image should require you to scroll left to right.

Quicktime Plug-in

Quicktime Plug-in available on WWW from: http://quicktime.apple.com Quicktime plug-in

All Macintosh computers with system 7.0 or greater should already have quicktime installed in the system, you therefore only need to install the Quicktime Plug-in into the Netscape Navigator plug-in folder.

PC computers can also use quicktime with the quicktime plug-in. Version 3.0 of Netscape Navigator comes with the plug-in installed.

Installing the Quicktime plug-in.

The quicktime plug-in required to run the movies on a Macintosh once downloaded, drag the file with this icon into the Plug-in Folder which is inside the Netscape Navigator Folder following installation of the WWW browser.
