Introduction

Growth MoviesDevelopment is a dynamic process with structures changing (shape, name and relationships) over time and the best way to show this is with dynamic images, such as movies. This first page introduces the various movies and animations in UNSW Embryology that illustrate many different aspects of development.

Most movies on this site are in Quicktime format and your web browser will require that plug in to watch these movies. There are 2 ways to watch each movie. Firstly, click the image or text link to open a new page with both the movie and a more detailed text description of features that can be seen. Secondly, the link below the images and text labelled Quicktime with the movie name and (file size) will open only the movie in a new window.

This current page introduces the many different topic movies and anaimations available, alternatively use the Other Move Pages links below.

Growth Movies

Growth Movies

These are movies and animations showing general growth changes of the embryo and fetus.

Week 1 Movies

Week 1 Movies

These movies show features related to fertilization and early cell division forming the blastocyst.

Links: Week 1 Movies

Week 2 Movies

Week 2 Movies

These movies show events of early implantation and development of the bilaminar embryo during the second week.

Links: Week 2 Movies

Week 3 Movies

Week 3 Movies

These movies show events of gastrulation, the trilaminar embryo and early tissue formation during the third week.

Links: Week 3 Movies

Week 4 Movies

Week 4 Movies

Movies showing the continued folding and early organ/system formation (old page). This is also covered in more detail in System Notes

Stage 13 Movies

Stage 13 Movies

This embryo was a 6mm crown-rump length pig embryo from approximately day 32, sectioned into 47 slices.

Links: Stage 13 Three Dimension Movies | Stage 13 Slice Movies

Stage 22 Movies

Stage 22 Movies

This embryo was a 27mm crown-rump length human embryo from approximately day 56, sectioned into 49 slices and reconstructed from these slice images.

Human Embryology Movies

Larsen Movies

A set of animations based upon various aspects of development from "Human Embryology", with special thanks to the late Prof William Larsen.

Ultrasound Movies

Ultrasound Movies

These ultrasound movies show both 2 and 3 dimensional ultrasound scans of the developing human embryo and fetus. There is also a set of abnormal ultrasound scans, showing developmental defects as detected by this prenatal screening method. Some recent developments in MRI scanning techniques are also shown.

Neural Movies

Neural Movies

Movies showing features of different stages of neural development. These movies also include the migration of neural crest.

Mesoderm Movies

Mesoderm Movies

Movies showing features of early mesoderm development and later changes in tissues derived from mesoderm (skeleton, muscle, etc).

Links: Mesoderm Movies | Stage 22 Skeletal

Head and Neck Movies

Head and Neck Movies

Movies showing features of head and neck development. This also includes changes that occur during development of the face.

Vasculature Movies

Vasculature Movies

The vascular system of blood vessels undergoes extensive remodeling during development. This includes the formation of new blood vessels and loss of early na early symmetrical organised vascular system.
